IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Iowa Hawkeyes have named redshirt freshman running back Gavin Sawchuk as their starting running back for the 2023 season, head coach Kirk Ferentz announced Thursday.

Sawchuk, who is 6-foot, 230-pounds, has impressed the coaching staff with his physicality and vision during spring practice.

A native of Erie, Colorado, Sawchuk rushed for over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior at Erie High School.

He was a consensus three-star recruit and was ranked as one of the top 10 running backs in the state of Colorado.

Sawchuk redshirted during the 2022 season, but he saw action in two games on special teams.

He will now be counted on to lead the Hawkeyes' rushing attack in 2023.

Sawchuk is expected to get plenty of help from a talented group of running backs, including junior Leshon Williams and sophomore Jaziun Patterson.

The Hawkeyes are coming off a 7-6 season in 2022.

They will open the 2023 season on Sept. 2 at home against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
